June 12-15 - Cuyamaca Equestrian Assn 2008 gathering at the beautiful Chaney Ranch near Warner Springs. For registration form call Ernie Smith (619) 992-6511

The proposal for a horse camp near the Merigan trailhead has been “shelved”, according to Cuyamaca Park Superintendent Nedra Martinez. During a meeting with CEA and other equestrians on April 16, Nedra informed us that State Parks and Recreation will not proceed with plans that would commit park funds to a new facility when 48 state parks are in jeopardy due to the state financial crisis.

In response to “what now?”, Nedra believes that the process would not be started over once funds were available, but continued from the current stage of study and review. To support efforts to save state parks from closure, go to <savestateparks.org>

Fiesta Show Report

Our show had a good turnout and the weather was most cooperative.  Sport horse and dressage were exceptionally well filled.  Heard lots of good comments about our judges and staff.   Thanks so much to all of you who volunteered to help out, from members, friends and families. This is our annual event and the one big money maker for the club.  We are able to present our good programs to you as a result of our show.  Be sure and think about what you’d like to volunteer for next year.  Lots of positions to fill and a wonderful way to make more friends in our Arabian business.

If you have any ideas for future classes, programs, etc., please call one of your board members and relay that information to them.  We are constantly striving to insure that our club meets all the needs of our members.

We are providing a brochure to be passed out at all the special events that take place within Region One, free to our members.  Our website provides another avenue for free advertising as well as the newsletter.

Remember folks, I can’t create news!!  Send me your show wins, foaling, change of address and anything else that you would deem newsworthy.  HELP!!

SPECIAL NOTE - from 2007 (An alert to the symptoms of West Nile Virus)

FROM JANICE GRAMLICH - “I’m feeling much better each day. I actually had Mark take me out to the ranch so I could visit my babies! How did I feel? Well, from the middle to the 30th of August I felt sick to my stomach (no throwing up) had a severe headache and just able to get to the ranch, do a few things and collapse when I got home. On the 30th I started throwing up and when we checked my temperature on Saturday it was 103.4. We decided to go to urgent care.

When we got to the hospital my temp was almost 104 and I was, of course, shaking like a leaf. Vicky made the comment to the ER Doctor to check me for West Nile, more like a joke.  Long story short, they took a spinal tap and discovered that I had a Cept Spinal Miningitis. They decided to keep me and my stay was for 4 days.  There was only one time during this bout that I felt I wasn’t going to make it, which was Sunday morning around 1AM, when I couldn’t breathe due to the weight in my chest. I called the nurse who then called a Doctor and they started with oxygen and a couple of drips. By 7AM I felt much better.

On the 4th day the doctors had a conference meeting and decided that since my fever was now under control and my headaches were not severe and they could not give me any medication to help, that I should go home and bed rest for at least a couple of weeks. When I got home from the hospital I received a call from the County Health Department advising me that I had West Nile Virus that had caused the spinal meningitis.

It has now been 5 weeks since I started not feeling well and I think I have a couple more weeks to go before I will feel any energy. Today (Sept 21) I have enough energy to go for around an hour, then I’m down for a couple of hours of rest”. This was the fourth West Nile of a human in San Diego County as of the Sept date.
